The Apparitions of Fatima: The Angel

Beginning with three visitations of the Guardian Angel of Portugal served as preparation for the visits the next year of the Mother of God.
The children -- Lucia dos Santos, age 10, and her cousins, Francisco Marto, age 9, and his sister Jacinta Marto 7, were leading their family flocks to pasture.
1. In the spring of 1916, their first encounter.
A light in the form of a young man, and as brilliant as crystal in the rays of the sun. He said: Do not be afraid. I am the angel of peace.
Pray with me. He knelt, bending his forehead to the ground:
PRAYER: My God, I believe, I adore, I hope, and I love You. I ask pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope, and do not love You. (3times)
The Angel rose and said 'Pray in this way. The hearts of Jesus and Mary are ready to listen to you.'
2. The summer of 1916, Lucia describes how the angel appeared to them once more.
Pray! Pray! The hearts of Jesus and Mary have merciful designs for you. You must offer your prayers and sacrifices to God, the Most-High, in reparation for the sins by which He is offended, and in supplication for sinners. Above all, bear and accept with patience the sufferings God will send you.
Lucia tells us, The Angels' words sank deeply into our souls showing us Who God is, what is His love for us, and how He wants us to love Him too; the value of sacrifice and how it pleases Him; how He receives it for the conversion of sinners.
3. Uncertain of time, September-October 1916.
After we had repeated the Prayer, we saw The Angel holding in his left hand a chalice and over it, in the air, was a host from which drops of blood fell into the chalice. The Angel leaves the chalice in the air, kneels near us and tells us to repeat three times:
PRAYER: Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I adore You profoundly, and I offer You the Most Precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifferences by which He is offended. And by the infinite merits of His most Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg the conversion of poor sinners.
After that he rose, took again in his hand the chalice and the Host. The Host he gave to me and the contents of the chalice he gave to Jacinta and Francisco, saying at the same time,
Eat and drink the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ terribly outraged by the ingratitude of men. Offer reparation for their sakes and console God.
Once more he bowed to the ground repeating with us the same prayer thrice: ‘Most Holy Trinity… and disappeared.

On May 13, 1917 - October 13, 1917: Our Lady of Fatima under the title of Our Lady of the Rosary appeared to the three shepherd children in Cova da Iria, Fatima, Portugal.
Throughout her 6 apparitions, Mary makes predictions and warns that unless everyone prays, repents, and abandons sin, the world will suffer war, turmoil, and persecution of the Church.
The Apparitions of Fatima: Mary's Messages in Fátima, Portugal.
First Apparition of Fatima:
On May 13, 1917, Blessed Virgin Mary appears for the first time to the 3 children as they were tending the sheep. Mary urged the children to "Pray the Rosary every day, in order to obtain peace for the world, and the end of the war (World War I)."
Mary tells the children that there is much to suffer, for the countless sins by which God is offended and in supplication for the conversion of sinners, but the grace of God will be your comfort.
She instructed the children to come to the same place at the same time every 13th day of the month for the next five months.
Second Apparition of Fatima:
As promised, on June 13, 1917, Mary appeared again instructing the children to continue to pray the Rosary every day and for Lucia to learn to read. Lucia was told that she would remain on Earth for some time longer than her cousins and that she would help in letting people know of Mary. Mary told Lucia that God wants to “establish devotion to my Immaculate Heart in the world.” Mary tells Lucia, My Immaculate Heart will never abandon you, but will be your refuge and the way that will lead you to God.
Third Apparition of Fatima:
On July 13, 1917 in addition to urging the children to continue to pray the Rosary for Peace in the world, Mary told the children to pray for the conversion of sinners and all the sins committed against her Immaculate Heart. In this apparition, Mary revealed three secrets or prophetic visions.
Three Parts to The Secret of Fatima.
  • The FIRST SECRET: In her third memoir, Lúcia said that the first secret, a vision of Hell and the suffering of sinners, was disclosed to them, 3 children on 13 July 1917. The vision of hell lasted briefly. But the reality of it terrified them. To save souls God wishes to establish in the world the devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If they do what I will tell you, many souls will be saved, and there will be peace.
  • The SECOND SECRET: It foretold the end of World War I. But if humanity did not stop offending God another and worse one will begin in the reign of Pius Xl. When you see a night illuminated by an unknown light, know that is the great sign God gives you that He is going to punish the world for its crimes by means of war, of hunger, and of persecution of the Church and of the Holy Father. To prevent this, Mary asked for:
  • The Consecration of Russia: A request for the Pope to specifically consecrate Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
The Communion of Reparation: The practice of receiving Communion on the first Saturday of five consecutive months.
Devotion to the Immaculate Heart: Mary promised that if my requests are heeded, Russia will be converted and there will be Peace. If not she will spread her errors, throughout the world, causing wars and persecutions of the Church. The good will be martyred, the Holy Father will have much to suffer, various nations will be annihilated.
  • The THIRD SECRET: The third a vision of the death of the Pope and other religious figures. Revealed by the Virgin Mary to three shepherd children. Released by the Vatican in 2000, it describes a "Bishop dressed in white" (interpreted as the Pope) climbing a steep mountain and being killed by gunfire and arrows alongside other martyrs. The Catholic Church associates it with the 1981 assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II.
Fourth Apparition of Fatima:
In August, the children were prevented by the disapproving civil authorities to go to their usual meeting place and missed Mary’s apparition on the 13th day. However, on August 19, Mary appeared to the children and urged them to continue to pray.
Pray, pray a great deal and make many sacrifices, for many souls go to Hell because they have no one to make sacrifices and to pray for them.
Fifth Apparition of Fatima:
September 13, 1917, at the Cova da Iria in Portugal. An estimated 30,000 pilgrims gathered to witness the event, during which Mary instructed the 3 children to continue praying the Rosary every day in order to obtain an end of the war.
People went to see Mary but only the children saw the apparitions of Mary and described them to the people.
Mary stated in October Our Lord will come, and Our Lady of Sorrows and of Mount Carmel and St. Joseph with the Child Jesus to bless the world. God is pleased with your sacrifices, but He does not want you to sleep with the rope on; wear it only during the day. In October I shall perform a miracle so that everyone may believe.
Sixth Apparition of Fatima:
On October 13, 1917 the children surrounded by a crowd of 70,000 people stood under a torrential rain as Blessed Mary appeared and revealed her identity: “I am the Lady of the Rosary, I have come to warn the faithful to amend their lives and ask for pardon for their sins. Do not offend the Lord our God anymore, for He is already too grievously offended by the sins of men.”
I desire here a chapel in my honor to be built, that people continue to recite the Rosary every day. The war will end soon, and the soldiers will return to their homes.
Then the miracle she promised happened: the Miracle of the Sun.
Many described the miracle similarly: Mary opened her hands and launched a ray of light in the direction of the sun; the rain stopped suddenly and there appeared an exceptionally bright sun. The sun began to turn, projecting colorful bands of light. Then the sun appeared as if it was spinning out from the sky and towards the crowd, as people fell to their knees and begged for mercy. Meanwhile, as promised, the three children saw the Blessed Lady dressed in white with a blue cape, along with St. Joseph with the Child Jesus blessing the world. Then after this vision they saw The Lord bless the world, standing next to Our Lady of Sorrows. After this vision vanished, they saw Our Lady once more, this time resembling Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
In 1925, eight years after the Fátima events, Sr. Lúcia, reported another set of related apparitions, known as the Pontevedra apparitions.

The 100 Years of Our Lady of Fatima
Pope Francis visited Fátima, Portugal in 2017 to celebrate the centenary of the apparition of Mary.
Francisco Marto and his sister, Jacinta Marto, were beatified in Fatima by Pope John Paul II on May 13, 2000 and canonized in May 2017 by Pope Francis.

The First Saturdays Devotion, also called the Communion of Reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, was requested by the Virgin Mary during the apparitions of Our Lady of Fátima in Fátima, Portugal, on 13 May 1917, as well as during apparitions in Pontevedra, Spain, on 10 December 1925 and 15 February 1926.

The First Saturday’s devotion was approved by The Bishop José Alves Correia da Silva, of Leiria-Fátima, on 13 September 1939 in Fátima.
The Saturday Devotion must be performed on 5 consecutive 1st Saturdays of the month with the intention of making reparation for sins against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
1. Go to Sacramental confession. The confession can be made up to 8 days before or after the 1st Saturday, but the individual must be in a state of grace to receive Communion. The confession should be made with the intention of reparation, and if this intention is forgotten, it can be formed at the next confession.
2. Receive Holy Communion. It can be received at a Saturday daily mass or at a Saturday evening (i.e. a Sunday Liturgy) Mass.
3. Pray five decades of the Rosary. Keep Mary company while meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary, in addition to the recitation of the Rosary.

CONCLUSION: Pope Benedict XVI-(Joseph Ratzinger) on Our Lady of Fatima.
What is the meaning of the Secret of Fatima as a whole (in its 3 parts)? What does it say to us?
The exhortation to prayer as the path of "Salvation for Souls" and, likewise, the summons to penance and conversion.

I would like to mention a key expression of the "Secret" which has become justly famous: "my Immaculate Heart will triumph". What does this mean?
The Heart open to God, purified by contemplation of God, is stronger than guns and weapons of every kind. The FIAT of Mary, the word of her heart, has changed the history of the world, because it brought the Saviour into the world - because, thanks to her Yes, God could become man in our world and remain so for all time. The Evil One has power in this world, as we see and experience continually; he has power because our freedom continually lets itself be led away from God. But since God himself took a human heart and has thus steered human freedom towards what is good, the freedom to choose evil no longer has the last word. From that time forth, the word that prevails is this: "In the world you will have tribulation, but take heart; I have overcome the world" (John 16:33). The message of Fatima invites us to trust in this promise.
