Silence denotes a moment of complete stillness.
Silence allows us to centre ourselves and prepare to meet with God. Silence moulds us into an attitude of humility before our Creator. We learn to be open to the ways of God, being quick to listen and slow to speak.
A journey of silence is a prayer that enriches the conversation we have with God Himself. GOD, Who is forever active and yet still, calls us to the secret place to meet with Him there.
Thus, silent prayer is, quite simply, the practice of sitting in silence, quieting one's own thoughts, and making oneself present to God.
It is a beautiful time that enriches the soul.
Psalm 46:10 “Be still, and know that I am God.
We must intentionally take time away from the busyness of our lives so that we may hasten to God-Who speaks to us in the silence of our hearts.
Through the Gospels we hear of Joseph, as he accompanies the Blessed Virgin Mary to Bethlehem and as he leads his family into exile (to Egypt) and when they return home to Nazareth. We then hear of Joseph and Mary going through a search for The child Jesus and find Him in the temple after which, Scripture tells us, Jesus lived in obedience under His parent's authority.
Also, we learn of Mary from the Gospels, we learn of the 4 occasions (The Annunciation, The visitation of Mary to Elizabeth-The Magnificat, the Child Jesus found in the temple and the wedding at Cana) which are a reference to Mary having spoken.
But we also learn that Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.
We understand, of Mary's silence in the Gospels and the silence of St. Joseph.
The unknown years of Jesus (also called his silent years) generally refers to the period of Jesus's life. The last we hear of Jesus is at the age of 12, when He is found in the Temple.
Jesus spent 30 years of His life in Nazareth. Those 30 years of silence and solitude were to prepare Himself for the three years of public ministry.
Silence is meekness,
silence is mercy,
silence is patience,
silence is humility,
silence is faith,
silence is trust in an all loving and faithful God
silence is power.
"But Jesus was silent" Matthew 26:63
Silence is a necessary condition for prayer and for unbroken union with God.
Silence is necessary not only to discern the will of God, but to accomplish it as perfectly as possible.
